FULLERTON, Calif. -
Four different UCLA players tallied goals and a stifling Bruin defense allowed just two Denver shots on goal as No. 2-ranked UCLA defeated the Pioneers, 5-1, in women's soccer action Monday afternoon at the FILA Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
UCLA sophomore Lindsay Greco scored the first two goals of the game in the 14th and 26th minutes, and the Bruins (2-0) took the 2-0 lead into the locker room. Tracey Winzen opened a flurry of scoring late in the second half, heading in a goal in the 74th minute. Stephanie Rigamat followed six minutes later with UCLA's fourth goal.
Denver junior midfielder Kristin Warren (Littleton, Colo. / Highlands Ranch HS) got the Pioneers (1-1) on board in the 81st minute when she chipped in a penalty kick for her first goal of the season. UCLA would close the scoring with less than six minutes to play when Mary-Frances Monroe knocked in a 10-footer past junior goalkeeper Erica Izard (Fort Collins, Colo. / Poudre HS). Izard netted 13 saves on the afternoon.
UCLA held a staggering 30-3 edge in total shots, and 18-2 in shots on goal.
The Pioneers head south to Lubbock, Texas, next weekend for the Sheraton Shoot-out. Denver will face UTEP this Friday, Sept. 7, before facing host Texas Tech on Sunday, Sept. 9.
