Sept. 30, 2001

Box Score

DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team, playing its second consecutive overtime game, got a goal from junior Nic Hartman (Littleton, Colo.) in the 113th minute of play today at Pioneer Field, lifting the Pioneers to a thrilling, 2-1 sudden victory over UMKC. With the win, Denver improves to 5-2-2. UMKC drops to 5-2-0.

After a scoreless first half, the Kangaroos were the first ones on the scoreboard as John Clark took a pass from teammate Mike Rosenthal and beat Denver keeper Parker Jarvis (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) with a hard shot that gave UMKC a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute.

The Pioneers answered just over five minutes later when senior Matt Harrell (Littleton, Colo.) took a pass off a corner kick from teammate Michael Piserchio (Littleton, Colo.) and scored his third goal of the season that tied the score at one goal apiece. The two teams played scoreless the rest of regulation and ended the first 90 minutes tied a one.

Following a scoreless first overtime that saw both teams have solid chances to win the game, Hartman rescued the Pioneers for the second consecutive game. After Kangaroo goalkeeper Beau Williams misplayed a Denver crossing pass, Hartman was the beneficiary of the loose ball in front of the Kangaroo net and fired the game winning goal past a stunned Williams.

"I am so proud of this team for the weekend we had," head coach Chad Aston said. "Our guys never quit the whole weekend and just kept battling. When we got down a goal in the second half of this one, we didn't panic and knew what we needed to do."

Jarvis recorded five saves for Denver as the two teams combined for 56 fouls. The Kangaroos were without the services of midfielder Eric Zobrist for the final six minutes of the game and the overtime periods after he was issued a red card in the 84th minute.

The day's first game saw Alabama A&M beat New Mexico in a high scoring game, 5-2. For the Bulldogs, Eugene Sepuya recorded a hat trick.

Denver is next in action this Friday, Oct. 5 when they play at UC-Irvine at 8 p.m.
