Box Score

DENVER, Colo. - The University of Denver men's soccer team dropped it seventh consecutive game Sunday afternoon, falling to New Mexico, 1-0. With their fourth straight conference loss, the Pioneers fall to 6-11-0 on the season, 0-4-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. New Mexico improves to 13-2-0, 3-0-0.

The only goal of the game came in the fourth minute when Lobo freshman Ben Ashwill registered his league leading 10th goal of the year. Junro Narita flipped a pass over the defense and let Ashwill outrun the competition and beat Denver senior goalie Brian Lux (Lakewood, Colo.).

Denver tried its best to tie the score late in the game with three excellent opportunities. The first came in the 72nd minute when Pioneer sophomore forward Alejandro Diaz (Caracas, Venezuela) stole the ball from Lobo defender Danny Bills. Diaz had a clear shot at Lobo keeper Andrew Weber but was turned away.

The next two close calls were shots taken by Pioneers sophomore Chris Fagnant (Libertyville, Ill.) in the 84th minute and sophomore Christian Bowers (Holladay, Utah) with 11 seconds left in the game. The loss was the first for Denver against UNM since the 1997 season.

This is the first time that Denver has lost seven consecutive games since 1973 when they dropped eight straight. The Pioneers have scored only three goals during the skid and have not scored more than one goal in a game since a 2-0 September 29 victory over St. Mary's. This also marks the fourth time during the streak and sixth this season that Denver has been shutout.

The Pioneers finish their road schedule without a win (0-7) for the first time since the 1973 season when they went 0-6.

The Pioneers will try and break the streak Sunday, Nov. 3 at Pioneer Field when they take on MPSF foe San Diego State in a crucial conference match-up at noon.
