Men's Soccer Drops Third Straight

DENVER, Colo. - The University of Denver men's soccer team dropped its third consecutive game Wednesday afternoon, falling to in-state-rival Colorado School of Mines, 1-0. With their third consecutive lose the Pioneers fall to 6-7-0 on the season. The Orediggers improve to 8-3-0.

Colorado School of Mines got on the board in the 20th minute when Scott Phipps scored his eighth goal of the year beating Denver's goalkeeper Lami Harmon (Newark, Del.).

The Pioneers had several chances to tie the game. Their best coming in the 30th minute when senior Robert Rice (Kingwood, Texas) tried to put a ball in the lower left corner of the net. Oredigger goalkeeper O.J. Bullard was there for the save, one of his six on the afternoon.

The two teams played a scoreless second half highlighted by physical play and three cautions.

The Colorado School of Mines last victory over Denver came in Chad Ashton's second season has head coach of the Pioneers, on October 25, 1998. The Orediggers defeated Denver 2-1 in overtime. The Pioneers still lead the all-time series 43-11-3.

Denver drops to below .500 for the first time since September 15, 2000 when they were 1-2. This is also the first time the Pioneers have lost more than six games in a season since 1999, when they finished 8-11-0.

The Pioneers enter conference play next week when they take on San Jose State Friday, Oct. 18 in San Diego at 8:30 p.m.
