Junior goaltender Adam Berkhoel (Woodbury, Minn.) made 25 saves as the No. 3 Denver Pioneers escaped Alaska Anchorage with a 2-2 tie tonight in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) action.
The tie moves the Pioneers record to 9-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the WCHA. Alaska Anchorage goes to 1-7-3 overall and 0-5-2 in the conference play.
Sophomore Kevin Ulanski's (Madison, Wisc.) power-play goal at 17:26 of the second period tied the score at 2-2 for Denver. Ulanski's fifth goal of the season beat Reiter glove side and senior's Greg Barber (Kelowna, B.C.) and Aaron MacKenzie (Terrace Bay, Ontario) earned assists on the play for Denver. The assist for MacKenzie extended his assist and point streak to five games.
The teams exchanged many scoring opportunities in the third period and in overtime, but neither team could score. Berkhoel and Seawolf goaltender Kevin Reiter played extremely well in net for both teams. Reiter, the reigning WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, made 29 saves for Anchorage. Berkhoel, starting for the first time on Friday this season in place of injured Wade Dubielewicz (Invermere, B.C.) made several key stops for Denver as well.
Junior Lukas Dora (Lednice, Czech Republic) opened the Pioneer scoring and gave Denver a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 13:00 of the first period. Dora received a great pass from junior Ryan Caldwell (Deloraine, Manitoba) and beat Anchorage goaltender Kevin Reiter top shelf with a wrist shot from just inside the left face-off circle for his fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Jeff Drummond (Leduc, Alberta) also earned his seventh assist on Dora's goal.
Anchorage tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal at 7:59 of the second period. Matt Hanson redirected a shot by Matt Shasby in front of the net to beat Berkhoel for his third goal of the season.
The Seawolves took the lead at 2-1 with an even-strength goal from Curtis Glencross at 15:07 of the second period. Glencross beat Berkhoel top shelf on a 2-on-1 breakaway after a Pioneer turnover. John Hopson started the play and Ales Paras made the key pass to Glencross for the tie-breaking goal.
The Pioneers will look for their fifth WCHA win tomorrow night against UAA. Game time is scheduled for 9:05 p.m. MT.
