Brett Starkey Named SBC Player of the Week

Jan. 13, 2003

NEW ORLEANS - The Sun Belt Conference (SBC) has named junior center Brett Starkey (Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain HS) Player of the Week for January 13, 2003. Starkey led the Pioneers to a two-game road conference sweep over the Florida International University (71-60) and the University of North Texas (59-55) this past week

Starkey's nine points and 16 rebounds against North Texas helped Denver pick up its 10th win of the season, which is two more than Denver won all of last season. The Pioneers' 10 wins in 2002-03 are also the most in a season since returning to Division I in 1998. Starkey averaged nine points and 11.5 rebounds during the week, including connecting on 54 percent of his shots from the floor and 80 percent from the charity stripe. The Lakewood, Colo. native, is currently third in the SBC with six double-doubles.

Starkey has led the Pioneers in rebounding every game this season and is currently first on the team (9.9). He is also third on the squad in scoring, averaging 9.8 points per game.

The Pioneers play host to SBC foe Arkansas State on Thursday, January 16. Game time is set for 7 p.m. MST in Hamilton Gymnasium and can be heard live over the internet at DenverPioneers.com.
