Jan. 31, 2003

Box Score

DENVER - Senior Kevin Doell (Saskatchewan, Sask.) scored his 50th-career goal and added an assist to lead the Denver Pioneers over the University of Wisconsin Badgers 4-1 at Magness Arena on Friday in WCHA play.

The Pioneers, who won both games at Wisconsin in November, have seven straight wins over the Badgers. Denver ends a three-game winless streak and is 16-7-4 and 7-6-4 in the WCHA.

The Pioneers led throughout the game, which was choppy and penalty-ridden, but featured spurts of scoring and strong saves from junior goaltender Adam Berkhoel (Woodbury, Minn.), who made 25 saves and has a 10-3-2 record.

"There were times we looked good, but it was not the best game we have played," Pioneers coach George Gwozdecky said. "I was pleased that we were able to win a tough game like this."

Junior Connor James (Calgary, Alta.) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead after the first period by pushing junior Max Bull's (Faribault, Minn.) rebound past Wisconsin goaltender Bernd Buckler. Bull has a goal and two assists in the last three games.

Doell, who leads the Pioneers in scoring with 33 points, gave the Pioneers a two-goal lead scoring a shorthanded goal on a breakaway at 13:13 of the second period.

Assists came from freshman defenseman Brett Skinner (Brandon, Man.) and sophomore Luke Fulghum (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who scored three points last Friday in a 3-3 tie with Minnesota State-Mankato.

Just 19 seconds later, Rene Bourque scored his team-leading 14th goal for the Badgers, who were on the power play, to make the score 2-1 at the end of the second period.

"Considering what we are facing and the lack of success we've had, I was pleased how we played the third period by being able to get that third goal," Gwozdecky said.s

Sophomore Kevin Ulanski (Madison, Wisc.) scored on the power play just over three minutes into the third period to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead. Ulanski worked hard around the net with junior Greg Keith (Delta, B.C.) and Doell, who received assists on the play, to get the puck behind Buckler.

Senior Aaron MacKenzie (Terrace Bay, Ont.) added an empty-net goal with 26.6 remaining while the Badgers were on the power play and had Buckler pulled for the extra attacker.

Denver meets Wisconsin again Feb. 1 at Magness Arena. Face-off is at 7:05 pm MT.
