DAVIS, Calif. - Junior co-captain Patience Baldwin (Baltimore, Md.) scored the game-winning goal, her last of five on the day to lead the University of Denver women's lacrosse team to its first win of the season, a 16-13 come-from-behind triumph at UC Davis in Mountain Pacific Lacrosse League (MPLL) play on Friday.

The game was the first for Denver in the 2003 season as its scheduled season opener was cancelled last week, while UC Davis falls to 1-2 overall and in the MPLL. In addition to Baldwin, the Pioneers (1-0, 1-0 MPLL) also got four goals from first year Steph Greenlees (Lake Forest, Ill.).

UC Davis scored eight of the first 10 goals of the game, yet Denver scored six unanswered goals to end the first half to cut the Aggie lead to 8-7 at the break.

"Going down 8-2 during the first 15 minutes of the game is something we cannot make a habit of," Denver coach Abby Burbank said, "I liked the way we came back and took control of the contest. Our attack really went to the goal well in the second half."

Denver wasted no time adding three more in the opening minutes of the second period to take the lead for good. The Aggies regained the lead in the 40th minute but the Pioneers would score five straight -- including three straight by Baldwin -- to amass a 15-10 lead into the 54th minute.

UC Davis would add three more but Denver closed its net beyond that point. Senior co-captain Mariana Spry (Nashua, N.H.) added one final goal for DU at the 58:26 mark to seal the win. Spry posted a 2-2-4 line.

In her first career-start sophomore Steph Schneider posted 10 saves in net for the Pioneers.

Denver returns to action on Sunday, March 2 when the Pioneers travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to battle MPLL foe Stanford. Face-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.
