COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Denver men's soccer team was shutout by the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Falcon Invitational, hosted by Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"This was one that got away from us," said Pioneer coach Chad Ashton. "You have to capitalize on tough road games when given the chance, and we did not today. We will become a better team in the long run as a result of this loss."
Arni Pjeturrson scored the game's only goal in the 25th minute. Pjeturrson's shot curled over Denver's goalkeeper, sophomore Philip Zaranka (Englewood, Colo.), from the right side. Zaranka played only the first half for Denver, making one save, while allowing one goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Lami Harmon (Newark, Del.) made two saves as he shutout the Bulldogs in the second half.
Denver outshot the Zags, 16-10, but was unable to get one past Gonzaga goalkeeper, Vito Higgins.
Sophomores Liam Girard (Victoria, B.C.) and Thomas Flynn (Broomfield, Colo.) were both named to the all-tournament team.
The Pioneers returns to action in California on Wed., Sept. 3, as the play guest to St. Mary's College at 5 p.m. MT.
