DENVER - The University of Denver has named Cathy Nelson Reese at its women's lacrosse coach, Director of Athletics and Recreation, Dr. M. Dianne Murphy announced today.
Reese has spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland, where she was responsible for recruiting, scheduling, coaching, budget preparation, administrative work and fundraising. During her tenure at Maryland she helped lead the Terrapins to three National Championships, one final four and one final eight appearance.
"Cathy has played an integral role in building a strong women's lacrosse program at Maryland," said Dr. Murphy. "I fully expect growth and success for the Pioneers with Cathy at the helm."
Prior to her coaching duties at Maryland, Nelson Reese played for the Terrapins from 1995-98 winning four National Championships. The second-leading scorer on the 1998 NCAA championship team and that year's NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player, Nelson Reese's name dots the Terrapin record books. She ranks in the top-10 for her career and on the single-season charts in goals and assists and is in the top-15 for points scored at Maryland. She finished her career with 217 points, 140 goals and 77 assists.
Nelson Reese is still involved in lacrosse as a player and plays in the National Club Lacrosse League as a member of Team Toyota.
A two-time All-American and four-time national champion, Nelson Reese graduated from Maryland in December of 1998, earning her degree in speech communications. She is currently working on getting her Master's degree from Loyola College in business administration.
