Men's Soccer Rounds Out Tournament With a Tie

DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team continued its unbeaten streak at the Panther Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis., as it tied Cal Poly 1-1, after two overtimes on Sunday, Sept. 7. This was the Pioneers' first tie of the season, moving Denver's record to 1-3-1 on the season.

The teams were equally matched and recorded 15 shots apiece in the game. Denver had a few scoring chances in the first half, mainly from the likes of sophomore Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.) but could not capitalize on the opportunities. Both teams remained scoreless for the first half.

The Mustangs were the first to strike in the 59th minute as Danny Calderon received a pass from Justin Woodward and took a quick shot from 10 yards out. The Pioneers were persistent and refused to let the goal go unanswered. In the 81st minute of the game, junior Christian Bowers (Holladay, Utah) picked up a rebound in front of the goal and launched it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. The game stood tied at the end of the second period.

Although both teams were aggressive, neither managed to tally another goal on the day. Denver created some scoring chances but Mustang goalkeeper Greg Blevins made four saves in the in the second overtime. Pioneer sophomore goalkeeper Lami Harmon (Newark, Del.) made eight saves on the day and recorded his first tie of the season, setting his record to 1-1-1.

The Pioneers will return to action on Sept. 12-14, when they host the John Byrden Classic at Pioneer Field. Denver will face Northeastern on Friday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. MT and New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 1:30 p.m. MT.
