As he approached his senior year of high school, John Kolstoe didn't think he was going to swim at the competitive level after the spring of 2000.

So Kolstoe took the practical approach. Do your best and see what happens. What's the worst that could happen?

Likewise, what was the best that could happen? Four years later, Kolstoe still is finding out. The Fort Collins High School graduate is swimming at the University of Denver in his senior and final season of collegiate competition.
