BOSTON - The Boston College Eagles scored three times in the first period to skate away with a 6-2 victory over the No. 11 Denver Pioneers tonight in nonconference hockey action before 5,810 fans at Kelley Rink. The loss sends the NCAA defending champion Pioneers to an 0-2 record, while No. 1 Boston College improves to 1-0 after the season-opening win.
The Eagles started fast as Patrick Eaves scored on the power play at 4:02 of the first period. Chris Collins tucked away a shorthanded goal at 13:34 and Dan Bertram scored on a breakaway at 18:18 to give the Eagles a commanding 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Freshman Ryan Dingle (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) tallied his first career goal and only score of the second period. Dingle received a beautiful centering pass from freshman Tom May (Eagan, Minn.) and beat BC goaltender Matti Kaltianen stick side at 18:28 of the second period.
BC's Ryan Murphy scored on a breakaway at 10:40 of the third period to make the score 4-1. Eaves recorded his second assist of the game on the play and finished the game with four points.
Senior Jon Foster (Suffern, N.Y.) scored his third goal of the season at 14:49 of the third to make the score 4-2, but Bertram's second goal (empty net) and a goal from Dave Spina made the final score 6-2.
Freshman Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) started his first career game in net for the Pioneers. Mannino survived the fast start by BC and made 21 saves in his collegiate debut. Kaltianen got the win for Boston College with 19 saves.
Denver struggled on special teams for the second consecutive game. The Pioneers went 1-of-10 on the power play and allowed two shorthanded goals. Denver is now 2-of-20 on the power play this season.
The Pioneers will try for their first win of the season at Northeastern tomorrow night. Puck drop for the game is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. MT.
