BOSTON - Senior Kevin Ulanski (Madison, Wis.) scored the game-winning goal and sophomore Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta) made 29 saves to lift the 11th-ranked Denver Pioneers to 4-2 win over Northeastern in nonconference action tonight at Matthews Arena. The win is the first of the season for Denver, which ends a two-game losing streak. Northeastern falls to 1-2 overall.
"We earned a much-needed win tonight," head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Our seniors really stepped up tonight and Glenn (Fisher) was terrific in goal."
Ulanski tallied the game-winning score at 16:11 of the second period. The senior intercepted a Northeastern past and ripped a wrist shot past Gibson for the go-ahead goal. The goal was Ulanski's first of the season and sixth game-winning goal of his career.
Adding goals for the victorious Pioneers were freshman Geoff Paukovich (Englewood, Colo.), senior Jon Foster (Suffern, N.Y.) and sophomore Matt Carle (Anchorage, Alaska)
The Pioneers rode the hot goaltending of Fisher in the first period. The sophomore, making his second start of the season, made several spectacular saves in the period and stopped all 15 shots by the Huskies. Denver peppered Northeastern goaltender Keni Gibson with 13 shots and Paukovich finally got the Pioneers on the board at the end of an entertaining opening stanza. Paukovich banged in a Luke Fulghum (Colorado Springs, Colo.) shot on the power play at 18:40.
Northeastern tied the game on a power-play goal from Mike Morris at 2:48 of the second period, but senior Foster answered for Denver with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Foster buried a Gabe Gauthier (Buena Park, Calif.) pass from the right faceoff circle on the power play at 6:33. Northeastern's Bryan Esner tied it on the power play at 13:00, but Ulanski's game-winner moments later gave Denver a big road win. Carle sealed the win with a power-play tally at 16:19 of the third.
Gauthier chipped in two assists and Carle recorded his first multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist. Denver outshot Northeastern 37-31 and converted 3-of-12 power-play opportunities.
Denver opens WCHA play next weekend against St. Cloud State at Magness Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. MT on Friday, Oct. 22.
