21 First-Place Finishes Propels Pioneers Over Fighting Sioux

DENVER - The University of Denver men and women's swimming and diving team won 21 of 26 events to defeat North Dakota Saturday afternoon in El Pomar Natatorium.

The Pioneers began the meet with both men and women claiming top honors in the 400-yard medley relay, 1000-yard free and 200-yard free. Sophomore Harmony Zeller (Arvada, Colo.) and freshman Nathan West (Englewood, Colo.) won the 1000-yard free with times of 10:43.21 and 10:02.39, respectively.

The Pioneers swept the 200-yard free with senior Katie Eisenhard (Brownsboro, Ala.) leading the way. Sophomore Meghan McNally (Lonetree, Colo.) and freshman Caroline Carson (Midland, Texas) finished second and third, respectively.

Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) had another outstanding performance with two first-place finishes, winning the 200-yard free (1:42.34) and the 500-yard free (4:41.44).

In the 500-yard free both men and women swept the event. Carson finished first (5:15.80), with McNally, senior Katie Dorweiler (Urbandale, Iowa) and Eisenhard in second, third and fourth place, respectively. On the men's side, West, sophomore James Monghan (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman Erik Bordwell (Wilmette, Ill.) finished behind Jollands.

Senior captain Nate Chapman (Chesterfield, Mo.) won his first race of the season, capturing the 100-yard butterfly (52.84). Freshman Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.) also won it for the women (58.19). Iverson also continued her domination in the 200 IM winning the event for the third consecutive time (2:08.95).

Sophomore Katie Conyers (Lakewood, Colo) won the 100-yard breast (1:07.48) while freshmen Olivia Pollard (Wildomar, Calif.) and Tessa O'Connell (Denver, Colo.) finished in second and third, respectively.

The men and women capped off a spectacular afternoon winning the 400-yard free relay.

"We raced well today", said head coach Jim Henry. "Before the meet we talked about hustle and today I think both the men and women got the job done."

The men and women both remain undefeated in dual competition and will return to action Saturday, Nov. 6, when they take on Wyoming in Laramie at 1 p.m.
