SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The University of Denver men and women's swimming and diving teams were defeated by Utah this afternoon in the finale of the two-day meet against the Utes, 213-121 and 188-144, respectively. Freshman Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.) broke her own school record in the 400-yard IM (4:29.75).

The women began the meet strong and won the first two events, the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard backstroke. Denver's `A' relay team of freshman Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.), sophomore Katie Conyers (Lakewood, Colo.), Iverson and junior Michaela Amereller (Munich, Germany) claimed top honors in the 400-yard medley relay (3:54.89). Next Totura won the 200-yard back (2:03.68) and just missed her school record by a half of a second.

Iverson finished the weekend the same way she started it, in a dominant fashion with two first-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (57.89) and in 400-yard IM. She broke her own school record in the 400-yard IM by over two seconds.

Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) highlighted the afternoon for the men and also recorded two first-place finishes. First he won the 200-yard back (1:52.44) and later he claimed top honors in the 500-yard freestyle (4:40.04). The Pioneers swept the 500-yard free with freshman Nathan West (Englewood, Colo.), junior Brian Flaherty (Granite Bay, Calif.) and freshman Erik Bordwell (Wilmette, Ill.) in second through fourth place with times of 4:40.04, 4:48.54 and 4:53.14, respectively.

In the diving competition, freshman Holly Watson (Sugar Land, Texas) finished in second place for the Pioneers (190.43), while sophomore Erin Perko (Arvada, Colo.) placed third (174.98).

Despite the strong showings by several Pioneers, in the end it was not enough to pull ahead and go home with a win.

"I thought we raced well today especially for this time in the season," said head coach Jim Henry. "We showed much improvement and I think we are definitely in a position to swim well at the Notre Dame Invitational."

The Pioneers return to action on December 2, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., for the three-day Notre Dame Invitational.
