MIAMI, Fla. - The University of Denver women's soccer team ended its season with a 3-0 loss to North Texas in the semifinal game of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament tonight in Miami, Fla.
After shutting out the Mean Green 3-0 in the regular season, North Texas defeated the Pioneers tonight and moved on to face Florida International in the championship match on Saturday. This is the first time in three years that Denver has not advanced to the championship game.
Despite several scoring opportunities, Denver was unable to put the ball in the net and come back from the three-goal deficit.
North Texas scored its first goal in the 30th minute when Alyssa Carrier rebounded her own blocked shot and put it past goalkeeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.).
North Texas got their second goal early in the second half when Heather Hutyra blasted the ball from 10 yards out past Wiley. Melinda Pina scored on a breakaway to make the final score, 3-0.
"This wasn't the result we were looking for," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "But we played with a lot of poise and a positive attitude throughout the season. Next year we will come back, regroup and have a better ending."
Denver ends its season 9-10-2 and will return seven of its 11 starters next season to make another run at the Sun Belt Conference Championship and a berth into the NCAA College Cup.
