LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Denver men and women's swimming and diving team were swept by Wyoming Saturday afternoon in Laramie, Wyo., 149-90 and 144-99, respectively. The women had five first-place finishes including one relay win in the 200-yard medley relay, while the men had one first-place finish.
Denver's 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.), sophomore Katie Conyers (Lakewood, Colo.), freshman Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Lauren Bortnowski (Spring, Texas) started off the meet capturing the event (1:49.62).
The Pioneers dominated the distance free events and placed first and second in both the 1000-yard free and 500-yard free. Sophomore Harmony Zeller (Arvada, Colo.) led the way and claimed top honors in the 1000-yard free (10:48.35) and sophomore Meghan McNally (Lonetree, Colo.) placed second (11:01.39). Zeller also won the 500-yard free (5:17.78) while freshman Caroline Carson (Midland, Texas) came in behind her in second (5:21.96).
Totura added another first-place finish for the Pioneers in the 100-yard back (59.04) and she finished in second in the 50-yard free (24.90).
Iverson continued her dominance in the 200 IM winning the event for the fourth consecutive time (2:09.81). She also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (58.73).
On the men's side, sophomore Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) claimed top honors in the 200-yard free (1:44.28) and finished second in the 500-yard free (4:52.73). Freshman Matt Diotte (Auburn, Wash.) contributed valuable points for the Pioneers with two second-place finishes in the 50-yard free (21.41) and 100-yard free (47.95). Diotte was edged by merely four hundreths of a second by Wyoming's Grant Kritzinger in the 100-yard free.
"Wyoming is a very competitive team and they raced well", said head coach Jim Henry. "We learned a lot and gained valuable race experience today that we will build on for the rest of the season."
The men and women both will return to action on Friday, Nov. 12 when they travel to Salt Lake City, to battle Utah in dual competition.
