Fulghum's two goals help Pioneers to 4-4 Tie

Dec. 17, 2004

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. - Luke Fulghum scored his first shorthanded goal of the season to answer a four-goal Minnesota Duluth outburst as the seventh-ranked University of Denver hockey overcame a two-goal third period deficit for a hard-fought, 4-4 tie at Minnesota Duluth in front of 4,849 fans Friday night at the DECC. The Pioneers remained unbeaten in six straight games and are 10-5-1 on the season, 7-3-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play. Minnesota Duluth is 8-8-3, 6-6-1.

Denver jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period behind goals from Jon Foster (Suffern, N.Y.) and Fulghum. On the first Denver goal, sophomore J.D. Corbin (Littleton, Colo.) caused a turnover behind the Minnesota Duluth net and Foster found the loose puck and got it past Bulldog goaltender Isaac Reichmuth to give Denver a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers scored their second goal when freshman Ryan Dingle (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) made a pretty pass from the right circle that Fulghum slapped home from the crease.

Minnesota Duluth then scored the next four goals, the first coming at the 14:14 mark of the first period. The second period was all Bulldogs, as UMD scored twice in the period to grab a 3-2 lead. After Luke Stauffacher led off the third period with a power play goal to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead, the lead looked insurmountable for Denver.

But Fulghum got the Pioneers right back in the game at the 5:52 mark, when Dingle got the puck in the neutral zone and found a streaking Fulghum on the left side of the Bulldog zone. Fulghum held the puck then launched a wrister that beat Reichmuth over his stick-side shoulder to get Denver closer at 4-3. Just over one minute later, junior Gabe Gauthier (Buena Park, Calif.) knotted the score at 4-all with his 10th goal of the season. With the Pioneers on the power play, Gauthier got lost down low in the Bulldog zone and Paul Stastny (St. Louis, Mo.) found him to the left side of the goal where his one-timer found the back of the net and silenced the UMD crowd.

Both teams had their chances in overtime. UMD's Bryan McGregor had a wide-open chance on net but was stopped on a beautiful kick-save by Denver goaltender Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta) with 1:33 left in the extra session. With exactly one minute remaining, Denver's Mike Handza (Glenshaw, Pa.) found himself all alone with a breakaway chance but his shot went wide right of the net.

The Pioneers will try to for their first win in Duluth since 2002 tomorrow night with puck-drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m. MT.
