Pioneers Lose 2-0 to Wake Forest

Sept. 12, 2004

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Denver women's soccer team lost to Wake Forest this afternoon, 2-0, in the final game of the Wake Forest/adidas Soccer Classic. Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) and Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) were selected to the all-tournament team.

Despite being out shot 12-3 in the first half, the Pioneers held the Demon Deacons scoreless. Goalkeeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) had a dominating performance in the net making seven saves.

Wake Forest came out strong in the second half getting their first two shots in the 46th minute. About 10 minutes later, Sarah Kozey scored the first goal of the game off a rebound from a shot by Maggie Horne in the 57th minute.

The Demon Deacons scored again late in the second half when Katie Kokkinos took a shot at the top of the box, drilling the ball past keeper Wiley.

Wake Forest out shot the Pioneers 32-3. Wiley made a career-high number of saves in a single game, with 15.

"It wasn't the result we were looking for," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "Grimditch and Billingsley created opportunities for us to score but we were just unsuccessful at getting the ball in the back of the net."

Denver is now 2-4 on the season.

The Pioneers return to action this weekend in Colorado on the campus of the University of Colorado in Boulder at the Colorado Women's Soccer Classic. Action begins Friday, Sept. 17, when they square off against Wyoming at 2:00 p.m. Denver will face instate rival, Colorado, on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1:00 p.m.
