DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team fell to No. 1 New Mexico, 1-0, today at a soaked Pioneer Field. The Pioneers outshot the Lobos, 12-9, but were unable to capitalize. DU falls to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. New Mexico improves to 9-0-1, 1-0-1.

"We played one of our better games, but were unable to finish when we needed to," DU Head Coach Chad Ashton said. "When you play great teams you need to finish and make plays. We did some of that and a lot of credit has to go to their keeper."

Junior midfielder Ben Mendozza's (Aurora, Colo.) header at the beginning of the second half was Denver's best chance. Lobo keeper Mike Graczyk made a diving save to preserve his shutout.

New Mexico's Cody Hanna scored the game's lone goal in the 28th minute. Hanna was able to put home a loose ball in the box after a free kick from teammate Lars Loeseth. The kick was granted after senior midfielder Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.) was awarded a yellow card.

Thirty-six fouls and six cards were issued during the very physical match.

Sophomore Matt Bredehoft (Fort Collins, Colo.) registered four saves in the losing effort.

The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 16 when they host league rival Air Force at 2 p.m. at Pioneer Field. DU's women's team hosts Sun Belt Conference foe Arkansas State at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
