BOSTON - Sophomore Karson Gilliespie stopped 31 shots and Dan Spang scored the lone goal of the game leading No. 20 Boston University to a 1-0 win over No. 13 Denver in nonconference action tonight before 5,889 fans at Agganis Arena. Spang scored the game-winning goal in the first period and Gilliespie recorded his first collegiate shutout with 12 saves in the first period, 10 in the second and nine in the final stanza. BU improves to 4-4-2, including a 4-1-1 mark against ranked opponents, while DU falls to 5-6-2. The Pioneers are winless (0-3-2) in their last five games.
"Give BU a lot of credit tonight," head coach George Gwozdecky said. "I thought their goaltender (Gilliespie) played really well, but I think we didn't make him make a lot of tough saves. This is a tough loss, but we'll get through this."
Spang's first period goal at 12:34 proved to be the game-winner. He drove the net untouched after taking a pass off the left faceoff circle from teammate John McCarthy. Spang's backhanded shot deflected off DU defenseman Adrian Veideman (Sicamous, B.C.) and past Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta) for the lone score of the game.
DU outshot BU, 31-24, but couldn't solve Gilliespie. The Pioneers also went 0-for-5 on the power play and failed to score on a 5-on-3 advantage for one minute and 53 seconds in the second period. Matt Carle (Anchorage, Alaska) had the best opportunity to score with the two-man advantage, but his blast from the point hit the right post.
Fisher stopped 23 shots in the loss. The Pioneers pulled their junior goaltender for the remaining 44 seconds, but still came up empty. BU finished 0-for-2 on the power play.
DU plays at Massachusetts tomorrow night. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. MT at Mullins Center. The game will be broadcast live on KKFN AM 950 "The Fan" and DenverPioneers.com.
