Denver Tops Michigan Tech, 5-2

Nov. 4, 2005

Box Score

DENVER - Sophomore right wing Ryan Dingle (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) notched two goals, including one of Denver's three power-play tallies, to help the No. 9 Pioneers to a 5-2 win against Michigan Tech on Friday night at Magness Arena in front of 6,051 fans. Denver (4-3-0, 2-1-1 WCHA), playing its WCHA home opener, also was aided by three assists from sophomore left wing Paul Stastny (St. Louis, Mo.) and 16 saves by junior goaltender Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta).

"I thought Michigan Tech played very smart against us," head coach George Gwozdecky said. "There were too many turnovers from us in the neutral zone, which is unlike us. I thought we settled down in the third period and played a pretty good period."

Dingle has scored in five of his last six games and posted the fourth multiple-point game of his career. Denver's top line of Dingle, Stastny and senior center Gabe Gauthier (Buena Park, Calif.) combined for six points against the Huskies.

With the loss, Michigan Tech falls to 1-7-1 overall and 0-2-1 in WCHA play.

The Pioneers scored their first of two power-play goals in the first period when junior center Adrian Veideman (Sicamous, British Columbia) capitalized on a 5-on-3 advantage. Ten seconds after Michigan Tech's John Schwarz was whistled for hooking, Veideman scored his first goal of the season on a pass from junior defenseman Matt Carle (Anchorage, Alaska) just above the right circle and whistled it past Michigan Tech goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak.

Michigan Tech evened the score at 18:28 of the first period on a power play goal from right wing Nick Anderson. With 6.6 seconds remaining in the first period, Dingle recorded Denver's second power play goal of the night on a one-timer from Stastny on the right edge of the crease to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

After Michigan Tech tied the score at two on Jordan Foote's second-period goal, Denver responded with a goal of its own less than two minutes later. Dingle notched his second tally of the night on a pass from Stastny 9:52 into the period.

The Pioneers stretched their lead to two goals at 17:47 of the second period on freshman defenseman Chris Butler's (St. Louis, Mo.) power-play goal that gave Denver a 4-2 lead. The score was Denver's third power-play goal of the game.

Freshman left wing Patrick Mullen (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who was making his return after missing two games with a concussion, gave Denver a 5-2 lead at 13:16 of the third period to put the game out of reach.

Denver concludes its series with Michigan Tech on Saturday at Magness Arena at 7:07 p.m. MST. The Pioneers will raise their 2005 NCAA National Championship banner in a pre-game ceremony that begins at 6:30 p.m.
