DENVER- The University of Denver men's soccer team's two game winning streak was snapped when Washington's Jo Jo Katz and Leo Totev put two goals past Denver's Matt Bredehoft (Ft.Collins, Colo.) to give No. 21 Washington a 2-0 win at Pioneer Field. The loss drops the Pioneers to 2-2-1 while the Huskies improve to 3-1-0. Denver outshot the Huskies 18-6 for the match. Bredehoft made two saves in the loss.
The game was a physical, defensive match as both teams battled to put the ball in the net. The Pioneers jumped on the offense first on a Liam Girard (Victoria B.C.) shot that went wide of the Washington net in the fifth minute. Washington picked up its offensive pressure and in the 24th Washington's Evan Cummings played a through ball and Leo Totev connected for the Washington score.
The Pioneers went into halftime trailing, 1-0 but in the second half the Pioneers picked up the offensive pressure and pounded 10 shots at Washington goalkeeper, Chris Eylander. Senior Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.) almost put the Pioneers on the board in the 62nd minute of play putting a shot in the center of the net, only to have Eylander scoop it up for the save. Washington put another goal in the net in the 72nd minute to give them the 2-0 win.
"We played well", Head Coach Chad Ashton said. "We had a tough opponent but we need to stick our chances. It was an evenly matched game and had we stuck our chances we might have come out on the other side."
Denver is next in action on Sunday Sept. 18 when they play host to UC-Davis. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
