The University of Denver men's golf team shot 297-288 in the final two rounds Tuesday to finish in 10th place with a 54-hole total of 867 (15-over par) at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate golf tournament held at Arizona National Golf Club. The Pioneers shot rounds of 282-297-288 - 867 and finished 23 strokes back of tournament winner Brigham Young, who won the event with an 18-under par total of 834.
Brigham Young won the tournament by nine strokes over both Arizona State and Arizona, who finished tied for second at 9-under par 843. New Mexico was fourth (848) followed by Pepperdine (850) and Tulsa (850), Texas A&M (862), Texas (863), Arizona B team (865) and Denver.
Senior Charlie Soule (Longmont, Colo.) picked up right where he left off in the fall season and was Denver's low finisher, finishing in a tie for 12th place with a 54-hole total of 212 (1-under par). Soule shot 72-72-68 - 212 and finished eight strokes out of a three-way tie for first place. Arizona's Henry Liaw won individual medalist honors with an eagle on the fourth playoff hole over ASU's Alejandro Canizares.
Next for the Pioneers was senior Anthony Gillick (Arlington Heights, Ill.), who had a very solid first spring tournament in finishing in a tie for 26th with a 54-hole total of 216 (3-over par). Senior James Love (Calgary, Alberta), after opening with a 3-under par 68 Monday, finished with rounds of 74-77 and finished tied for 40th at 219 (5-over par).
Freshman Chris Gilman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) shot 71-75-74 - 220 (7-over par) and finished in a tie for 46th and freshman Jeff Koprivetz (Yorba Linda, Calif.) rounded out DU's scoring in a tie for 77th.
The Pioneers are next in action beginning Monday, Feb. 13 when they play in the Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah. The Pioneers won this event in 2005.
