ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The No. 16 St. Cloud State Huskies tallied three second period goals en route to a 5-2 win over the No. 11/12 Denver Pioneers in WCHA action tonight before a sellout crowd of 6,011 at National Hockey Center. SCSU's Andrew Gordon, Andreas Nodl and John Swanson had one goal and one assist each, and senior Bobby Goepfert stopped 31 shots as SCSU earned the series split. DU's Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.) and Ryan Dingle (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) tallied one goal each and Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta) took the loss by allowing four St. Cloud State goals. SCSU improves to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the WCHA, while DU falls to 2-2, 1-1.
"We are not happy with tonight's result, but in many ways we played better than we did last night," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We had a couple of defensive miscues in the second period that we'd like to have back, but that's the WCHA. We still came out of here (St. Cloud State) with two important league points."
Fisher made back-to-back starts in the same weekend series for the first time in his career. He had a good start with seven saves in the first period, but SCSU netted three goals in the second to end his weekend. Fisher (seven saves) stopped a career-high 47 shots in last night's 4-3 overtime win.
After SCSU burned off two DU power-plays in the first period, Gordon buried a power-play goal from the low slot at 8:01 for a 1-0 lead. DU answered 57 seconds later when Ruegsegger backhanded a no-look pass from Brock Trotter (Brandon, Manitoba). The Pioneers took their only lead when Dingle one-timed an Adrian Veideman (Sicamous, British Columbia) cross-ice pass at 11:24. DU outshot SCSU, 10-4, in the period.
SCSU fired three second period goals past Fisher to take a 4-2 lead into the third period. Ryan Lasch scored in traffic at 8:08 and Nodl beat Fisher low to his glove side at 9:21. Swanson ended Fisher's night at 13:21 with an uncontested blast from the left faceoff circle. Goaltender Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) ended the SCSU scoring spree with three saves in the final six minutes and 39 seconds of the period. SCSU regained the momentum despite being outshot by DU, 15-10, in the period. Goepfert was strong in net with 15 saves.
The Huskies added an insurance goal from Nate Raduns at 13:50 of the final period to seal their first victory. Mannino finished with eight saves in relief of Fisher. DU outshot SCSU, 33-20, but finished the weekend 0-for-7 on the power play. SCSU went 1-for-4 with the man-advantage.
DU hosts RPI in a two-game nonconference series during Homecoming and Hall of Fame Weekend on Oct. 20-21.
