DENVER - Senior goaltender Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta) stopped 21 shots and senior captain Adrian Veideman (Sicamous, British Columbia) and freshman Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.) both recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Denver Pioneers to a 5-1 win and a series split against RPI tonight before 6,183 fans at Magness Arena. Ryan Dingle (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), Andrew Thomas (Bow, N.H.) and Steven Cook (Denver, Colo.) added goals as DU improved to 3-3 and 1-1 in the WCHA. RPI falls to 1-1-1. With the victory, Fisher improved his record to 3-1-0 on the season.
"Glenn Fisher was by far our best player throughout the night," said Denver head coach George Gwozdecky. "He was outstanding and made some huge saves that allowed us to stay in the game."
Dingle put the Pioneers up 1-0 with a power-play goal at the 7:17 mark of the first frame. Veideman took a face-off win and threaded the needle on a pass up-ice to Keith Seabrook (Delta, British Columbia), who was streaking along the right-side boards. Seabrook carried the puck into the RPI zone and put a cross-ice pass right on Dingle's tape to give DU the early lead.
RPI evened the score at 6:39 of the second period on a power-play tally of their own. The Engineers took a 3-on-2 rush into the DU zone and made a quick tic-tac-toe passing play that resulted in a Jake Morissette goal.
The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead with under a minute remaining in the second stanza when Thomas notched his second goal of the season off a pass from Brock Trotter (Brandon, Manitoba). With Trotter controlling the puck along the RPI end boards, Thomas walked unnoticed into the slot and put himself into perfect position for Trotter's feed.
Ruegsegger gave the Pioneers a two-goal advantage at the 3:45 mark of the third period when he corralled the rebound of a Brian Gifford (Moorhead, Minn.) attempt and fired a wrist shot over RPI netminder Mathias Lange's right shoulder from the left face-off circle.
Denver took a 4-1 lead on a power-play tally by Veideman at 16:11. The defenseman fired a laser from the left point that went under Lange's glove and into the net.
Cook added a short-handed empty-net goal with 1:39 remaining on a shot from the opposite end of the ice that snuck into the goal.
Trotter finished with a career-best three assists and leads the team in scoring with 2-6--8. He has tallied 5-8--13 in 11 career games.
DU outshot RPI, 31-22 and finished 2-for-9 on the power play. RPI converted 1-of-6 opportunities with the man-advantage.
The Pioneers return to action with a two-game WCHA series against Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 27-28. Opening face-off is scheduled for 6:07 MST on both nights.
