Box Score

MADISON, Wis. - Senior goaltender Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta) turned in a stellar effort with 27 saves and fellow senior Mike Handza (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied the game-winning goal as the No. 14 Denver Pioneers blanked No. 7 Wisconsin 2-0 tonight before 13,684 fans at the Kohl Center. DU improved to 5-4-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the WCHA with its second consecutive road win. The Pioneers also improved to 10-1-2 all-time at the Kohl Center since the building opened in 1998. Wisconsin falls to 4-5-2 and 3-3-1 with its second consecutive loss.

"Glenn was really good in net for us tonight," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We picked up our play as the game went along and played a good third period. Our penalty kill was very effective and Mike gave us the goal we needed to get the win."

The shutout was Fisher's second of his career and second against the Badgers at the Kohl Center. Fisher improved to 4-2 this season with his third consecutive strong outing. After two scoreless periods, Handza slid a shot past All-American goaltender Brian Elliott off a rebound from a shot by T.J. Fast (Calgary, Alberta) at 2:29 of the third period for the game-winner. The game-winning goal was the third of Handza's career. Both of his goals last season were game-winners.

Redshirt freshman Brock Trotter (Brandon, Manitoba) iced the game with a goal at 17:15 off a great feed from defenseman Chris Butler (St. Louis, Mo.). DU killed off all five Wisconsin power-play opportunities and outshot the Badgers 32-27 in the win. Fisher keyed the penalty kill unit with several big stops on a late man-advantage opportunity by Wisconsin. The Pioneers were 0-for-6 on the power play.

The teams played a scoreless first period. DU outshot Wisconsin, 7-5, but squandered two golden opportunities to score in the first period. First, Patrick Mullen's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) breakaway was thwarted by Elliott near the four minute mark, and a 5-on-3 advantage was killed off by Wisconsin less than two minutes later.

The action picked up in the second stanza, but Fisher and Elliott (30 saves) kept the game scoreless heading to the third. DU dominated the Badgers by outshooting the home team 14-10 in the period. Sophomore Julian Marcuzzi (N. Vancouver, British Columbia) helped Fisher out by diving to the left post to stop a wrap around scoring chance by Michael Davies near the two minute mark.

DU will try for the series sweep tomorrow night at 6:07 p.m. MT.
