DENTON, Texas - Senior guard DaShawn Walker (Chicago, Ill.) lit up the scoreboard with 27 points, including four 3-pointers, but North Texas went on a tear in the second half and beat Denver 91-79.
The Pioneers (1-13, 0-4) led 48-45 after the first half, but North Texas (11-3, 2-1) ripped off a 24-10 run to start the second half, extending its lead to as many as 20 points.
The Mean Green outscored Denver 46-31 after the break, the 18th straight game the Pioneers have been outscored in the second half, dating back to last season on Feb. 18, 2006 against North Texas.
Denver's 48 points in the first 20 minutes were the most the team has scored in a half since putting up 58 in the first half against Arkansas State on Jan. 20, 2005.
Freshman guard Tyler Bullock (Lincoln, Neb.) scored 12 points, and junior center Adam Tanner (Melbourne, Australia) tallied a career-high 11 points.
North Texas shot 70.4 percent from the field in the second half and 62.3 percent in the game. The Mean Green had five players in double digits, including Michael Sturns, Keith Wooden and Kendrick Davis off the bench with 22, 20 and 18, respectively.
Mean Green forward Quincy Williams paced North Texas with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
