DALLAS - The No. 70 DU men's tennis team fell to 5-4 on the season after suffering a 7-0 loss at Southern Methodist University Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Pioneers were held scoreless on the weekend, falling 4-0 at No. 32 TCU Friday.
"Obviously, it is really disappointing that we were unable to win a match this weekend," said head coach Geoff Young. "It was our first time this season to play on the outdoor courts and that proved to be a factor in some of the matches."
In doubles, Young went with a different lineup with Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) and Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) teaming up at No. 1, Steve Flaks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Viktor Zetterholm at No. 2 and Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Aljosa Nipic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) paired in the No. 3 position. Unfortunately, the switch was to no avail as Persson and Smole fell 9-8 (9-7) to No. 57 David Kuczer and Alex Skrypko. Flaks and Zetterholm fell 8-4 to Oivind Alver and Peter Oredsson, while SMU's Henrik Soderberg and Federico Murgier defeated Holmstrom and Nipic 8-3.
Denver did not fare any better in singles as No. 43 Holmstrom was defeated 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 by No. 32 Oredsson in the No. 1 spot, the only singles match where a third set was forced.
In other results, Smole fell 6-3, 6-3 to Murgier at No. 2 singles, Skrypko defeated Persson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Zetterholm was ousted 6-3, 7-5 by Kuczer in the No. 4 position.
Next up, Denver returns home and opens the outdoor season against Montana March 3 at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.
