IRVINE, Calif. - Senior forward Colby Pearce scored the lone goal for DU in its season opener against UC Irvine that ended in a 4-1 Pioneer loss Friday night. Denver is 0-1 on the season.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft (Ft. Collins, Colo.) recorded four saves in the net for the Pioneers while UC Irvine's goalkeeper Greg Larson recorded two.

UC Irvine's Craig Ettinger scored the first goal of the game at in the 41st minute, the lone goal of the first half.

Pearce scored his unassisted goal 2:40 into the second half, tying the match before UCI scored the final three goals.

Freshman forward Kellen Christensen (Layton, Utah) had two shots on goal while freshman forward Collin Audley (Ft Collins, Colo.) added one.

The Pioneers will face Marquette this Sunday Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
