DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team powered through wind and rain to a 1-0 victory over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field. Freshman midfielder Collin Audley (Fort Collins, Colo) scored the lone goal of the game as Denver improves to 4-2-1 while Alabama A&M falls to 1-6-0.
"I wish we would have showed more emotion in the first half," Head Coach Chad Ashton said, "but defensively we are very tough and that was a big factor today."
The Pioneers scored the only goal of a game when Audley headed in Joey Mathot's (Port Moody, B.C.) free kick at 28:59. The goal was Audley's second of the season and he now leads the team in scoring with four points.
"Mathot's free kick was in perfect position for Audley to send it to the back of the net," Ashton said.
The Pioneer defense kept the Bulldogs from scoring for the rest of the first half and the entire second half as junior goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft (Fort Collins, Colo.) made four saves and recorded his second shutout of the season.
"I was very happy with the effort from the back four today," Ashton said. "We just need to do a better job of finishing offensively."
The Pioneers will host the No. 25 Memphis Tigers at Pioneer Field, Sunday, Sept. 17 at 11:00 a.m.
