WILMINGTON - Despite the efforts of freshmen goalkeeper Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.) and forward Miles Marmo (Excelsior, Minn.), the DU men's soccer team lost to the College of Charleston 2-1 in double overtime today. Marmo tallied the lone Pioneer goal of the game but that wasn't enough as College of Charleston improves to 4-0-1 while Denver falls to 2-2-1.
"It was a heartbreaking loss because we played really well, dominating most of regulation play as well as the first overtime," Head Coach Chad Ashton said. "Overall, I was very pleased with the effort."
The Cougars struck first scoring in 23rd minute of play when Grant Guthrie fired a lose ball inside the left post.
The Pioneers answered in the 76th minute after senior midfielder Ben Mendozza (Aurora, Colo.) made an incredible 40-yard run downfield to deliver the ball to Marmo, who one-timed it in for his first goal as a Pioneer.
"It was a fabulous individual effort by Mendozza to get the ball where Marmo needed it to score his first collegiate goal," Ashton said.
The Pioneers dominated most of play and outshot C of C 13-8 in the game and a whopping 5-0 in the first overtime.
The game came to a disappointing close when Zach Prince scored at 106:20 after a Pioneer freekick.
The Pioneers face the Stony Brook Seawolves Sunday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. for their final match of the UNCW Jameson Inn Classic.
