DENVER - Wisconsin netminder Brian Elliott recorded a 33-save shutout and snapped Denver's seven-game unbeaten streak as the Badgers blanked the Pioneers, 4-0, in WCHA action before a sellout crowd of 6,136 at Magness Arena. UW moves to 9-11-2, 6-7-1 following the victory, while DU drops to 15-7-2, 9-5-2.
"I have to give Wisconsin credit, because their intensity gave us problems all weekend long," said Denver Head Coach George Gwozdecky. "We created some scoring chances, but Brian Elliott was there to respond. We didn't have a lot of answers tonight. "
Wisconsin outshot the Pioneers by a 17-5 margin in the opening frame and scored the only goal of the period when Michael Davies took a long outlet pass from Ross Carlson and made a cross-ice feed to Ben Street, who beat DU netminder Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta) stick side 54 seconds into the game.
The Badgers stretched their lead to 3-0 after two periods on a pair of power-play tallies. Tom Gorowsky buried a feed on the goalmouth off a pass from Kyle Klubertanz at the 10:00 mark, while Matthew Ford's slap shot from the point got past Fisher at 11:57.
Andy Brandt added an empty net goal at 16:09 of the final period to wrap-up the scoring.
UW outshot DU 37-33 on the evening. The Pioneers were 0-for-7 on the power play, while the Badgers were 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
The Pioneers return to action Jan. 12-13 with a nonconference home series against Niagara. Puck drop is set for 7:37 p.m. MT on Friday and 7:07 p.m. on Saturday.
Notes: The last time Denver was shutout was by Alaska Anchorage's Nathan Lawson in a 3-0 loss on Dec. 10, 2005 ... Tonight marked the 48th consecutive sellout at Magness Arena ... DU has been outshot in four of its last five games ... UW ended a five-game losing streak against DU.
