SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Utah Utes defeated the No. 60 University of Denver Pioneers 5-2 in men's tennis action this afternoon at Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes won the doubles point and four singles matches to improve to 6-2, while the Pioneers won two singles matches and fell to 5-3. The loss was the second consecutive for the Pioneers, who dropped a 5-2 decision at BYU yesterday.
No. 20 Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) defeated No. 50 Zach Ganger in three sets at No. 1 singles. Holmstrom won 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 to improve his record to 7-1. Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) captured DU's other point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Utah's Miron Mann. The win upped Smole's record to 4-4.
Utah dominated in doubles. No. 40 Holmstrom and Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) dropped their first decision in eight matches at No. 1. The DU duo was defeated 8-5 by Ganger and Miron. Also losing doubles matches for the Pioneers were Smole and Ravjot Dhatt (Victoria, British Columbia) at No. 2 and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Timo Kienle (Ludwigsburg, Germany) at No. 3.
The Pioneers (5-3) return to action on Sunday, March 4 vs. Montana at Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.
