TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Denver men's tennis team had to complete all nine matches against the University of South Florida to edge the Bulls, 4-3, Thursday afternoon in Tampa, Fla., at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
DU (9-4) dropped the doubles point, getting only one win from senior Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and junior Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden), 8-4, over Mahmoud Hamed and Thomas Estrada.
After dropping the first singles match of the dual to the USF (6-9), No. 19 Holmstrom won the Pioneers' first singles point with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 decision over Ales Svigelj. Redshirt senior Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) tied the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marc Jaeger. Persson pulled DU ahead in the match, dropping Henning Hipp in three sets, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Bulls pulled even as redshirt senior Timo Kienle (Ludwigsburg, Germany) fell in three sets to Mahmoud Hamed. The dual came down to the final singles match of the day, as freshman Ravjot Dhatt (Victoria, British Columbia) needed three sets for the win over Daniel Daudt, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.
"Today's win was from all the work we have put in since day one," head coach Danny Westerman said. "We were on the brink of being blown out and the guys dug in and really stepped up. Each guy played for their teammates and that was the key to the win. I could not be more proud, not for the win, but for the way we competed."
The Pioneers continue their Florida trip Saturday, March 24 against North Florida at Noon.
