DENVER University of Denver point guard Steve Wetrich (Ottumwa, Iowa) has left the men’s basketball team due to multiple concussions, head coach Joe Scott announced today.

“I had a great time in my three years with the basketball team,” Wetrich said. “I wish the team the best of luck, and I’ll be there cheering them on every chance I get.”

Wetrich played in 74 games for the Pioneers, starting 32 times, and averaged 5.1 points and 2.4 assists. Last season, Wetrich averaged 7.4 points and 3.4 assists in 14 games.

“You never want to see anyone’s career cut short,” Scott said. “Although I never had the pleasure of coaching Steve, I know he was an important part of DU basketball during the last three years, and we wish him the best in all that his future holds.”

Wetrich will remain at DU and expects to complete a degree in psychology in 2008.
