Pioneers Fall to Portland, 2-1

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. The University of Denver men’s soccer team fell to Portland 2-1 at the Husky Fever Classic on Sunday afternoon.

“This was a tremendous letdown after Friday night’s win over Washington,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “But now we have to turn our focus to using the experience we gained during the nonconference portion of the schedule to build toward games in the MPSF, which are the most important part of our season.”

Portland broke the scoreless tie 35 minutes into the game, when Logan Emory shot to the far post from 10 yards out.

The Pilots added a second goal three minutes into the second half, when Alex Elliott scored on a penalty kick.

Junior midfielder Joe Mathot (Port Moody, B.C.) brought the Pioneers (4-3-0) back to within a goal when he buried a free kick from the top of the box with just under seven minutes remaining.

The Pioneers have a week off before opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play when they face defending MPSF champion New Mexico in Albuquerque on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
