Denver, Colo. No. 66 Denver won all nine matches for the second time this weekend in the 7-0 win over Northern Colorado Saturday night at the Meadow Creek Tennis Club. Freshman Varun Gunaseelan (Chennai, India) picked up his first career dual win over Andrew Buzaku 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles spot.
All three doubles matches were won and DU picked up the doubles point. Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) and David Simson (Vienna, Austria) defeated Paul Tschetter and Vinnie Fallico 8-2 at No. 1. Seniors Niklas Persson (Stockholm, Sweden) and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) beat Ryan Dunn and Austin Nunn 8-3 in No. 2. Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Ravjot Dhatt (Victoria, British Columbia) defeated Gerg Werner and Eric Morin 8-1 at No. 3.
The Pioneers picked up all six singles points to complete the sweep. Persson defeated Nunn 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and Landwerlen beat Fallico 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2. Simson beat Tschetter 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Rosen defeated Dunn 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, and Dhatt beat Morin 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.
"It's nice to start the season 2-0,” head coach Danny Westerman said. “Hopefully this will get us ready for a tough weekend against Minnesota and Middle Tennessee. The bright spot for us tonight was Varun picking up his first dual win as a Pioneer."
Denver moves to 2-0 on the season. Northern Colorado falls to 0-1.
The Pioneers will travel to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota Friday, February 1 at 5:00 p.m.
