Denver Shuts Out Air Force, 1-0

Box Score

DENVER For the third-straight game, sophomore goalkeeper Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.) led the University of Denver men’s soccer team to a 1-0 shutout, as the Pioneers defeated Air Force at Cadet Stadium on Saturday night.

Senior forward Kyle Christensen (Layton, Utah) scored the game-winner for the Pioneers from 16 yards out during the 59th minute. Junior midfielder Collin Audley (Fort Collins, Colo.) set it up by dribbling the ball up the middle of the field and passing it to freshman forward Sam Garza (Highland Village, Texas), who fed to Christensen.

“It was one of the best goals we have scored in my tenure here,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “It was set up by great passing and movement. Air Force gave us all we could handle, but we are all extremely happy with the way the team fought.”

With the win, Denver (5-5-0, 3-0-0 MPSF) remains undefeated in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation games and in first place in the standings. The win was DU’s first away from Pioneer Field this season.

Willis, the reigning MPSF Player of the Week, needed just three saves in the shutout, as the Pioneers outshot the Falcons 18-12. Air Force goalkeeper Jim Gullo tied a career-high with eight saves.

Denver’s defense limited Air Force (3-8-0, 1-2-0 MPSF) to just one shot on goal following Christensen’s second-straight game-winner.

The Pioneers continue their three-game MPSF road stretch next weekend, traveling to San Jose State on Oct. 17 and Sacramento State on Oct. 19.
