Box Score ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico The University of Denver men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to New Mexico in DU’s regular season finale on Sunday afternoon.
New Mexico’s Simon Ejdemyr scored on a penalty kick in the 67th minute, giving the Lobos (11-6-2, 7-3-0 MPSF) the game’s only goal.
“I am proud of the way our team played all year, which put us in the situation where we had wrapped up the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship prior to this game,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “Our primary concerns today were to stay healthy and to keep our composure to avoid any cards, and we succeeded in both of those goals.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.) made eight saves for the Pioneers (10-6-2, 8-1-1 MPSF), but New Mexico outshot Denver 16-5.
The loss snapped a 10-game Pioneers undefeated steak, the team’s longest since turning Division I in 1998 and longest overall since going 19-0-1 to start the 1989 season.
Denver, which clinched their first MPSF championship, awaits the seeding for its automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, which will be announced live during a selection show on ESPNews on Monday at 4 p.m. MT.
