Pioneers Roll Past George Washington, 13-9

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. Junior Megan Carver (Baltimore, Md.) had four goals and two assists, as the University of Denver women’s lacrosse team rolled past George Washington 13-9 on Sunday afternoon.

“We had a very strong first half,” head coach Liza Kelly said. “Megan Zeman (Littleton, Colo.) had a great game defensively with four caused turnovers, and Carver had a good game. Overall I thought it was a great effort across the field.”

Sophomore Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) added a hat trick and an assist, while sophomore Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.) had three goals in the DU victory.

Senior goalkeeper Becky Childs (Phoenix, Md.) allowed only four goals in almost 39 minutes of play, while recording 10 saves, the most by Childs in a game since stopping 12 shots against Duke in the season opener.

George Washington struck first when Lindsay Melvin scored the first of her three goals just 43 seconds into the game.

The Pioneers took over less than four minutes later, as Sanders scored a pair of goals within a 49 second span.

After GW tied the game, DU scored five-straight goals, including two by Carver, to take the lead for good.

In the second half, the teams both scored six goals. Trailing 11-7 with less than six minutes to play, GW attempted a comeback, scoring two goals to close the gap to just two goals.

However, Flury and junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) each scored goals to close out the contest in the final 18 seconds.

The Pioneers return home for their final two home games of the season next weekend. DU will face UC Davis on Friday at 2 p.m. Denver will honor its seniors in the last home game against No. 17 Stanford on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be webcast live on Pioneer Vision at www.denverpioneers.com.
