DU Records First NCAA Tournament Win

LOS ANGELES  No. 28 Denver blanked No. 41 Long Beach State, 4-0, at the NCAA Regional today in Los Angeles. The win marked Denver’s first NCAA Tournament win in its second appearance since turning NCAA Division I in 1998.

DU improved to 23-2 overall by claiming the doubles point and the first three singles matches. The Pioneers will face the winner of No. 7 UCLA (18-5) and Buffalo (12-8) tomorrow at 4 p.m. MT.

Julia Bauregger (Klagenfurt, Austria) clinched the win for the Pioneers, who have won eight consecutive matches, with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 decision over Stephanie Jeanes at No. 4 singles. DU made its other NCAA appearance in 2004, losing 4-1 to Michigan in the first round.

“We are so proud our team,” DU head coach Amy Jensen said. “We jumped to a quick 3-0 lead, but Long Beach State was closing in quickly before Julia finished the three-set win. We’re excited about this win and advancing to tomorrow’s regional final.”

DU jumped to a 1-0 lead by claiming wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) and Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) defeated Jeanes and Jessica Weeks 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. After No. 43 Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) and Bauregger lost 8-2 to No. 53 Stephanie Bengson and Hannah Grady at No. 1, Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) charted an 8-3 win over Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton at No. 3 doubles for the first point of the match.

Aksdal and Tirumurti’s doubles play quickly carried over into singles competition. Aksdal gave DU a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bengson at No. 2 singles and Tirumurti made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sutton at No. 6.
