No. 7 Saint Louis Edges Denver 1-0

Box Score

ST. LOUIS Saint Louis junior James Jaramillo found the back of the goal with just 2:27 left in regulation, giving the No. 7 Billikens a 1-0 victory over the University of Denver men’s soccer team on Saturday night.

“I thought we were pretty dangerous in transition, and I am disappointed that we weren’t able to come out on top,” head coach Bobby Muuss said. “We played a very good Saint Louis team that has a lot of tradition, but I thought we had great opportunities. We need to find ways to win games when we have as many chances as we did tonight.”

With a scoreless tie at the 87:33 mark, Brandon Barklage took a free kick from 40 yards out, and Jaramillo headed it into the far side of the goal.

Denver goalkeeper Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.) stopped six shots in his return to his hometown, while SLU goalkeeper Pat Disbennett recorded seven saves.

The Pioneers (2-4-0) and Billikens (3-0-3) both had 16 shots in the contest.

The loss snapped a two-game DU winning streak. The Pioneers are now 1-3 in one-goal games.

Denver next heads to Omaha, Neb., to face Creighton on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m.
