UMKC Edges Pioneers 2-1

Box Score

DENVER - Freshman forward Alex Tarnoczi (Castle Rock, Colo.) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season, but UMKC edged the Pioneers 2-1 at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.

The Pioneers (3-5-2) had a chance to get on the board first with a penalty kick from senior midfield Collin Audley (Fort Collins, Colo.) in the 34th minute, but UMKC goaltender Ken Cooper made a diving save to his right to deflect the shot.

The Pioneers came back minutes later to tally the first goal of the game, when Tarnoczi took a pass off a corner from Audley and hooked it into the upper right corner of the goal.

The Roos answered in the 43rd minute as Tom Black took advantage of a cross that ricocheted off Denver junior goalkeeper Joe Willis (St. Louis, Mo.), which left an empty net.

UMKC scored the game-winner in the 80th minute as John Bayron Sosa took the initial shot that hit the post, and David Sarabia put the rebound past an outstretched Willis.

Willis and Cooper both made five saves each for the night, and UMKC outshot Denver 22-20.

The Pioneers open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play next weekend, as they travel to San Jose State on Friday night and then Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon.
