Cheverie Blanks Buckeyes

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio - Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) stopped 36 shots for his fifth career shutout in No. 3 Denver's 2-0 win over Ohio State tonight in nonconference action at Value City Arena.

Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) scored as DU improves to 2-1 with the road win. Ohio State falls to 0-3.

Cheverie stopped 14 shots in the first period, 13 in the second and nine in the third to even his record at 1-1. Dustin Carlson had 30 saves for Ohio State.

Rakhshani's scored a wrap-around goal at 10:43 of the first period and Cheverie preserved the 1-0 lead with a great save on a power-play shot by Ian Boots at 14:23.

Rakhshani earned a penalty shot after being taken down on a breakaway by Matt Bartkowski at 2:37 of the second stanza. However, Rakhshani's penalty shot was denied by OSU goaltender Dustin Carlson.

Shore's first career goal made it 2-0 at 14:46. Shore stripped Sean Duddy in the slot for DU's lone power play goal of the night. DU burned off a 5-on-3 OSU advantage late in the period.

Ohio State pulled Carlson with 37 seconds left in the contest, but did not score. Cheverie's shutout was aided when Alex Carlson missed an open net at 15:15 of the final period.

DU finished 9-for-9 on the penalty kill and 1-for-7 on the power play.

DU and Ohio State play game two of the series tomorrow night at Nationwide Arena. Puck drop is set for 5:05 p.m. MT.

Notes: Rakhshani (1-4=5) has a three-game point streak to start the season. Anthony Maiani returned to the lineup after a two-game suspension. DU improves to 3-0 all-time at Value City Arena. DU's other wins came at the 2005 NCAA Frozen Four. DU radio announcer Jay Stickney missed the trip with the flu. Mitch Hyder, the play-by-play voice of the Denver basketball team, is taking Stickney's place this weekend.
