Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio - Cal Heeter made 39 saves for his first career shutout in Ohio State's 4-0 win over No. 3 Denver in college hockey action tonight at Nationwide Arena.
Four players scored in the game as Ohio State (1-3) earns its first win of the season. DU falls to 2-2. The Buckeyes earn the split after falling 2-0 last night.
Taylor Stefishen, Zac Dalpe (power play), Shane Sims (shorthanded) and C.J. Severyn (empty net) tallied goals for the Buckeyes, who had been outscored 9-3 in their first three games. Sergio Somma, Sims, and Serveryn each enjoyed two-point outings.
"It's a disappointing loss, but we're still finding our way," DU head coach George Gwozdecky. "Ohio State wanted this game more than we did and Heeter had a strong game in net."
Ohio State struck first at 6:53 of the opening period on a goal by Stefishen with assists going to Severyn and Sims. Dalpe made it 2-0 with a power-play blast from Sergio Somma and Sean Duddy at 14:17. Sims tallied a shorthanded goal after a blocked shot by Somma at 10:25 as the Buckeyes claimed a 3-0 lead.
Severyn iced the game with an empty-net goal at 16:34 of the final period.
Denver outshot Ohio State, 39-26, but went 0-for-5 on the power play. Freshman Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska) took his second loss with 22 saves for DU.
DU opens WCHA play at Minnesota next weekend.
Notes: A potential DU goal was disallowed at 1:44 of the second period. Freshmen defensemen Matt Donovan and William Wrenn were healthy scratches. DU is now 9-3 in NHL arenas since 2001-02.
