Box Score DENVER - Tony Mosey scored twice and Ryan Lasch had a goal and an assist to lead St. Cloud State to a 3-2 win over No. 2 Denver in WCHA action tonight at Magness Arena.
Senior Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.) scored two goals as the Pioneers fall to 9-4-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the WCHA, while St. Cloud improved to 6-6-2, 5-4-1.
After giving up first period goals to Lasch and Mosey, DU lit the lamp when Ruegsegger netted his first goal of the night on assists from Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta) and Brandon Vossberg (St. Paul, Minn.) at 11:15 of the third.
With 2:50 left in the game and the Pioneers trailing 3-1, DU went on the power play and pulled goalie Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) for the extra man. Ruegsegger capitalized on the 6-on-4 advantage, scoring his second goal 20 seconds later. Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Joe Colborne (Calgary, Alberta) assisted on the play. DU pulled Cheverie for the final 1:43 of the game, but didn't score.
"We had some great chances and played with a sense of urgency at the end of the game, but overall this was a disappointing loss," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "When we started to pick it up, you could see the kind of offense we're capable of."
Cheverie made 24 saves in his first loss of the season, while Dan Dunn posted 26 saves for the Huskies. DU outshot SCSU, 28-27, and went 1-for-2 with the man-advantage. The Huskies went 1-for-6 on the power play.
DU remains tied for first place in the WCHA with Colorado College. The teams will faceoff next weekend in a home-and-home series with game one in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Friday at 7:37 p.m.
Notes: Colborne has a four-game point streak, while Ruegsegger and Rakhshani each have three-game point streaks. DU will look to regain possession of the Gold Pan trophy, which CC has won the last three years. The Pioneers were 0-1-3 against CC last year.
