Box Score ANCHORAGE - Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored twice and freshman
Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska) stopped 22 shots in his hometown return as No. 2/3 Denver defeated Alaska Anchorage 3-2 in WCHA action tonight at Sullivan Arena.
Joe Colborne (Calgary, Alberta) added two assists and Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta) scored shorthanded as Denver improved to 6-2-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the WCHA. Alaska Anchorage falls to 3-6, 1-4. DU is unbeaten at 4-0-1 in its last five games.
Murray starred in his return to Anchorage with several big saves. He came up big in the third period by thwarting a UAA breakaway by Nick Haddad, stopping a 5-on-3 UAA advantage for 42 seconds and holding off a 6-on-4 advantage late in the third period. Murray improved to 2-2-1 with five saves in the first, eight in the second and nine in the third.
DU held a 2-1 lead after the second, but Rakhshani's power-play goal off a beautiful feed from Colborne at 3:51 in the third proved to be the game-winner.
The second period featured three goals. Sean Wiles staked UAA to a 1-0 lead at 6:38, but Martin was credited with his fourth goal when UAA forward Curtis Leinweber shoveled a clearing pass off goaltender Jon Althuis (16 saves) at 7:28. Rakhshani banged in a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 15:46 to give DU a 2-1 lead heading to the final stanza.
UAA made it a 3-2 game with a goal by Luka Vidmar with 36 seconds after DU failed to clear the puck on several chances. UAA won the shot battle 24-19, but DU held the home team without a power-play goal in five chances.
The teams will play game two tomorrow night at 9:07 p.m. MT.
Notes: DU improved to 11-0-2 in its last 13 games at Alaska Anchorage. Rakhshani leads DU with 6-5=11. DU is unbeaten at 5-0-1 when scoring on the power play.
