Box Score ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Sean Wiles scored twice to lead Alaska Anchorage to a convincing 7-3 win over No. 2/3 Denver in WCHA tonight at Sullivan Arena.
Patrick Wiercioch (Maple Ridge, British Columbia), Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood) scored for the Pioneers, who fall to 6-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the WCHA. Alaska Anchorage improves to 4-6, 2-4. DU's season-high, five-game unbeaten streak also ends with the road loss.
"We played well for the first 25 minutes, but give Anchorage credit for storming back to get the win," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We'll take the next two weeks to prepare for North Dakota."
DU struck first when Wiercioch's blast beat Bryce Christianson (20 saves) high to the glove side at 5:59 of the first period, but Wiles tallied the equalizer at 17:05.
The Pioneers went up 2-1 in the second when Rakhshani one-timed a Wiercioch feed with a 5-on-3 advantage at 3:58. But consecutive goals in a 1:41 span by Kevin Clark, Daniel Naslund and Curtis Leinweber did in the Pioneers.
Lee Baldwin scored 5-on-3 and Wiles' second goal ended the night for Anchorage native Adam Murray (9 saves). Ruegsegger scored on the power play at 15:53 and Josh Lunden scored late to make the final score 7-3. Lars Paulgaard (Vettre, Norway) stopped two shots in his first action of the season in relief of Murray.
DU outshot UAA, 23-18, and went 2-for-10 on the power play.
DU returns to action on Nov. 20-21 against North Dakota.
Notes: The seven goals allowed were the most the UAA has scored against DU since netting seven on Jan. 24, 1997. DU suffers its first loss in its last 14 games at Alaska Anchorage. Rakhshani leads DU with seven goals, while Wiercioch leads DU defensemen with 2-7=9.
